I stacked 5 - 8 inch round layers of pound cake, freehand carved the head shape with the mouth area more pronounced using a serrated knife, crumb-coated w/ buttercream, and then chilled for an hour. I rolled out a couple small pieces of fondant for the brow, and placed them on top of the cake before covering in fondant. I then covered the cake in dark grey tinted fondant, but did not smooth it out. I allowed the fondant to "wrinkle" on its own to resemble gathered skin, and cut the excess off at the bottom. I then rolled out more fondant, cut into 4 strips, and folded them in half to create the folds of skin around the mouth. With the same color fondant I cut out triangle shapes for the ears, and "glued" them to the head. I used rolled pieces of plastic wrap to shape the curl. For the nose I rolled out a small ball of black tinted fondant, and shaped the nose w/ a small cake dowel. The eyes, teeth, tongue, and collar were all made from gumpaste. This was my first dog cake, so I pretty much eye-balled all the measurements.
